COURSE DESCRIPTION:

People with dementia often experience toileting difficulties during the course of their disease, which create significant burden on care partners. These challenges may include:

  • Urinary Incontinence
  • Voiding in locations other than the toilet or commode
  • Fecal Incontinence
  • Difficulty/inadequacy with peri-care
  • Hiding soiled clothing or feces
  • Constipation

This presentation will address common reasons why these challenges occur and will provide learners with strategies to manage and reduce toileting difficulties and ways to collaborate with care partners. We will also discuss common barriers to strategy implementation.

A basic understanding of dementia and disease process is assumed. 


COURSE OBJECTIVES/LEARNING OUTCOMES: 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize common dementia-related toileting challenges
  • Apply the Triadic Model to determine factors influencing toileting challenges 
  • Choose appropriate non-pharmacologic strategies to manage and reduce the frequency of toileting challenges
  • Identify barriers to strategy implementation 
  • Provide examples for effective collaboration with care partners

Instructional Methods: This course utilizes the following instructional methods including: web-based video, corresponding powerpoint pdf available for download, post-test 

Target Audience: Clinicians and professionals who work with individuals living with dementia and their care partners.

Requirements and Continuing Education: 

In order to receive course credit, the learned must complete watch the entire video recording and pass the post-test with at least a 75%. Learners will have the opportunity to retake the course one time if they do not pass the test on the first try.
